Hai Kah Lang — famous fish soup in JB, 10/10

Sunday lunch at Hai Kah Lang (海脚人) in Taman Sentosa — the JB fish soup spot with a long list of famous varieties, a packed weekend room, and a queue system that actually works.

A lot of people in Johor Bahru already know this one. Hai Kah Lang sells fish soup and seafood noodles — fish head mi, mixed seafood, prawns, grouper, the full board — and plenty of those bowls are extremely famous around JB. We came on a Sunday (16 Aug, late morning). The place was extremely crowded, but the crowd stayed organised and they still served us very quickly. Everything we ate was superb. Clear 10 out of 10.

Where is Hai Kah Lang JB?

Hai Kah Lang JB Sentosa sits at 173, Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru — look for the big white rooftop letters and the blue awning that reads Seafood Noodle · 鱼头米 · Fish Head Noodle · 海鲜粉. Same Jalan Sutera stretch as Sin Kimdo Barbecue, so this corridor is an easy JB food loop.

Official hours for the JB outlet: Sun–Thu 8am–9:30pm, Fri–Sat 8am–12am. Call 011-1651 9813 if you want to confirm before a special trip. Site: haikahlang.com.

Queue first — then order — then table

Take note before you walk in: you need to take a queue number first. After that you place your order, and then they assign you a table. Everything is very systematic — not chaotic despite the weekend crush. Our order slip shows table 5, two pax, dine-in around 11:49am. Food came in probably less than 10 minutes, even though the queue was long. That’s the part that impresses me as much as the bowls — crowded Sunday, still fast.

What we ordered

For two people we went:

  • Signature Sauce Mix Seafood Dry Noodle (H4) — dry, with wantan mee
  • Leopard Coral Grouper slicesmilk soup, without fried
  • Hai Kah Lang homemade otak-otak
  • Fried prawn paste fish
  • HKL white coffee (cold) + kopi C (hot)

Leopard coral grouper — milk soup

The soup bowl is why people talk about this place: thick milky broth, big slices of leopard coral grouper, tomato, coriander, fried shallots. Fresh fish, generous portion, broth that tastes like they actually simmered bones — not thin “fish-flavoured water.” This is the famous-side of the menu done properly.

Signature sauce mix — dry seafood noodles

The dry bowl is the other half of the table: prawns, squid, fish balls, shellfish, spring onion, crispy fried garlic / shallots over wantan mee tossed in a dark house sauce, with a separate light broth on the side. Crowded seafood on top — the kind of mixed plate that shows why Hai Kah Lang’s variety list is so long. Superb with the soup bowl beside it.

Sides — otak-otak and fried prawn paste fish

Homemade otak-otak came as a golden-orange slab, pre-sliced, with a thick brown dipping sauce — fragrant, proper fish-paste bite. The fried prawn paste fish pieces were thick-battered and crunchy — excellent next to the soup and dry noodles. Both sides earned their place; nothing felt like filler.

Weekend crowd — still organised

Expect a long queue on weekends. We still felt the system was under control: number, order, seat, food. Staff move fast. If you hate waiting with no structure, this is one of the better busy JB spots — the process is clear and the kitchen keeps up.

Verdict — 10/10

Food: superb across soup, dry noodles, and sides. Ops: crowded Sunday, still systematic and quick. Famous fish-soup varieties in JB, and this visit lived up to the reputation. I’d come back. 10/10.
